Email Emergency

* Authors note: So, I haven't visited this site since November, and honestly stopped posting here because I seemingly had no audience. Just logged back in and I have close to 40 views on all my recent posts. Someone please make it make sense LOL. Anyways, for whoever is still following, I guess I'll start posting here again. “Email Emergency”

Personally, I think we’re on the cusp of a national crisis. No, I’m not talking about the literally dozens of other national crises that I often blog about, with a seemingly fresh new hell unleashed almost daily. I’m simply talking about email. 

Let me clue you in on why I’m thinking about this right now. I just moved to NC after 26 years in NYC, and I figured I might finally get my lazy ass out of the house and start gigging on a regular basis. After all, if I’m not here to share my music, why the hell am I even here on this earth? Add to that the motif of transitioning from a “small fish in a big pond to a big fish in a small pond,” so surely I can make some waves down here, right? 

Honestly, it was a long, hard, cold, dark winter for me. Many factors contributed to finally making this move. But first and foremost was the idea of the chance to finally get out and start gigging on a regular basis. My show two weekends ago in Kernersville was really in the planning stages for much longer, so it was no surprise I was able to pull that one off rather quickly. But what I’m now finding is that LITERALLY NO MUSIC CLUB ANYWHERE IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA IS PAYING ANY ATTENTION TO EMAIL REQUESTS FOR GIGS. 

I know it’s not factually the case, but it truly feels like I have been blacklisted in this state. Like, somebody from NYC who hated me got wind of this move and made a call to the NC Gig Syndicate™ and screamed “whatever you do, don’t pay attention to this guy!” Like I said, this is obviously not really happening, but it has started to feel that way. I have reached out to numerous clubs in numerous cities and have gotten literally ONE response — that being a simple “can you send more information,” after which I sent the information and now he is not responding to me at all. 

I don’t know. Maybe I’m actually a terrible musician and people have just been “trying to be nice” whenever I perform in telling me how wonderful I am. Either way, it seems to me that if part of your job at a club is to book musicians, then perhaps YOU SHOULD RESPOND TO YOUR DAMN EMAILS. Two of these clubs I have actually now contacted on three separate occasions. And those same two don’t seem to have working telephones either. I called one two days ago and it immediately went to an outgoing prompted message basically saying “this voice mailbox is full, sorry, it sucks to be you.” The other club LITERALLY DOESN’T EVEN PUBLISH A PHONE NUMBER ANYWHERE ONLINE. 

I know I’m just in a real frustrating situation right now, feeling paranoid and such, but really, this is kind of a national issue across the board, right? We have become a country that uses email simply to hastily get our own thoughts or requests across to whoever it needs to go to — but in general we basically ignore those thoughts and requests that come our way. I can’t tell you how many of my work colleagues over the years I ended up standing with behind their desk, and I glanced at their computer screen and noticed email inboxes with literally HUNDREDS of unread emails. Not hundreds of emails — hundreds of UNREAD emails. 

Like, how do people actually function in this society if they can’t keep up with a simple stupid email account? In all of my full time jobs that required email maintenance, my inbox typically had about TEN emails. Not ten UNREAD emails — literally TEN emails in total. I think if you want to work full time in a white collar position, then you should be required by law to answer emails within at least 48 hours. Hell, we’ll even give you 72. But if you can’t — AT THE VERY LEAST — give a quick reply to say “too busy now, will get in touch soon!” then you should be fired from your position, to make way for someone who can actually handle the workload. Think Erin Brockovich on this one. 

Better yet, I vote we have one annual “Email Inbox Maintenance Day,” in which everyone who uses email for their job is required to spend one work day only answering emails. Or hell, at least OPEN them, so it even just appears that you care at all? 

I assume I’ll eventually hear from these clubs I’ve reached out to. But, it’s already kind of killing my passion and fervor to bring my NYC-tested musicianship down to NC for these “Homecoming Concerts.” It won’t really seem much of a homecoming if I’m booking those venues for next spring, will it? I’m just feeling kind of useless and unappreciated right now, like I felt in NYC over that long cold hard winter. 

And the next winter will be here before we know it.
