Bad Faith

Last night, I rewatched the documentary about the emerging Christian Nationalism movement entitled “Bad Faith.” If you haven’t yet seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it immediately. It explains in great detail the roots of how we got to where we are today — a new, totally unexplainable milieu in which if you are simply registered as a democrat, you are now literally DEMONIC.

With the authoritarian screws tightening every day, we now find ourselves in a rather bizarre setting, in which simply THE WAY THAT YOU VOTE might be grounds for harassment, detainment, imprisonment, rendition to a third world country, and, likely eventually, execution. How the hell did we ever get here? Well, this documentary does a bang-up job explaining this absolute freak show

If you haven’t seen the film, all you really need to understand is that over many decades, the evangelical Christian movement was coopted and subsumed by the dark, racist underbelly of our history’s baddest political actors who believe(d) that white equals right and everything else is evil. Pure and simple. And they believe — and seem about to achieve — in a country basically akin to The Handmaid’s Tale, in which Christianity is the required state religion, and you best submit or else.

Here’s the thing, though. It will take at least a generation, if not two, to fully and finally implement this power structure. We will most likely see a bloody civil war first, with carnage the likes of which we haven’t seen domestically since the actual first civil war. Fun times, right?

So, to those who want to usher in this new American reality: you're basically saying you're willing to die, and for your children to die, all so that the SUBSEQUENT generations will have a Christian nation? I mean, you won't even get to enjoy the fruits of the new theocracy! And that comfy lifestyle you've built for yourself and your family will be out with the bathwater. But here’s the thing: that end result is NOT the “Kingdom of Christ.” It’s simply a country with a state religion with ubiquitous pools of blood saturating the land.

And all that art and music dies too — that will be the most heartbreaking part of this whole quest. 

I hope most of us — at least those who have half an education and are paying attention — realize the immense scientific backsliding we’ve done in a mere 9 months: Tylenol,  pediatric cancer research, storm monitoring systems, measles outbreaks, vaccine denial, to name just a few.

So, again for you Evangelical folk in the back: you’re really willing to die, and to sacrifice your children’s lives, NOT for the rapture; NOT for the second coming; NOT for Christ’s kingdom on earth — but just for Christianity to become the law in THIS country at some point in the future after you're gone?

Weren’t these the same folks screaming about how Sharia law was going to overtake America just 2 decades ago? (If not last week?)

To quote Kurt Vonnegut’s “Cat’s Cradle,” which I also started again last night: “The trouble with the world was . . . that people were still superstitious instead of scientific. He said if everybody would study science more, there wouldn’t be all the trouble there was.” Amen to that.

And to also quote Monty Python: What a senseless waste of human life.

I hope it’s worth it to y’all. Because I have a feeling that, apart from the doomsday preppers, you honestly have no idea what’s actually about to transpire in this country.
