Angst #3: Our Current Political Climate
As if there isn’t enough angst in my life due to all the reasons enumerated over the last few days, there is also the issue of the direction our country is currently heading. It’s bad enough with all of the ridiculous headlines constantly bombarding us through our daily news feeds, which make one feel like we’re living in the Upside Down in Stranger Things.
But it’s quite another to wake up to a meme posted by the President of the United States basically insinuating that I’m now apparently A SATANIST. I mean, you couldn’t dream this crap up if you were a seven-figure Hollywood script writer. Jesus Christ. The Onion is surely going out of business soon.
This is all ultimately related to “the list” which I’ve discussed in detail in two previous posts. And I realize there are now several more categories into which I personally fit, to eventually qualify for that list — which I’ll address in the coming days. As a white man, I’ll likely be further down the list, but my number will come up eventually. Guaranteed.
Am I the only one reading these daily news headlines, scratching my head, and wondering WHAT THE HELL is going on with this country? 1984, Idiocracy, and The Handmaid’s Tale were supposed to be works of fiction for entertainment, not prophetic blueprints for how we’re going to run a country with a nuclear arsenal that outweighs all other countries combined. I honestly sometimes go to bed wondering if NYC will simply be wiped off the map while I sleep. But whereas back in the 80’s that was a fear of foreign aggression, now I have to worry about my own god damn government enacting this nightmare scenario?? And just because we’re “a blue city”???
Did you see what happened in that Chicago apartment building the other night?
Did you see that video of A HUNDRED government agents in full tactical gear with weapons drawn slowly walking down a dimly lit street in an Illinois suburb?
Did you see that white men wearing masks, refusing to identify themselves or even simply say which government department they are with, are now simply pulling up in unmarked vehicles and throwing random passersby into vans and driving off — ALL WITH IMPUNITY? Did you see this is happening to AMERICAN CITIZENS on a daily basis??
Did you see we are now at a de facto state of war with Venezuela after yet another indiscriminate boat bombing?
Did you see that Hamas has to respond to Trump’s demands BY SUNDAY, or — I’m guessing — OR ELSE?
Did you see that democrats are now considered “the party of hate, evil, and Satan”?
Good lord. With everything else going on in my life right now, this current state of political affairs is not one conducive to healthy, natural REM cycle sleep. We are on the fringe of living in an actual dystopian nightmare, and perhaps about to enter yet another bloody Civil War and/or World War.
So, with everything else going on in my life, I have to worry about this crap as well. I’m casting a large net to see where I might land as far as employment possibilities go — but whilst sending resumes to so-called “Red States,” I do so thinking to myself, “Do I REALLY want to live in a city completely surrounded by gun worshipping rural rednecks armed to the teeth who hate people that simply think we should be nice to each other and who by the way are now EVIL SATANISTS?????
Heather Cox Richardson says that during times like this, it’s supremely important that artists and musicians create content. She really holds us up as imperative in fending off this fascist takeover of our democracy. So, again, with basically a nonexistent audience to not enjoy the fruits of my extensive diverse creative labor, I ask again:
WHY THE HELL AM I HERE? WHAT PURPOSE DO I ACTUALLY SERVE??
